Private Charter 6 Nights

We have just returned from a cruise on the Emma Jane.It was excellent. The crew were fabulous.Nothing was too much trouble. Rob was a great captain ,keeping us safe and accommodating our wishes. What a nice guy.Zoe was our wildlife expert and guide ,so enthusiastic ,friendly and knowledgable. Nicola was our chef, her cooking was amazing.Every meal was fantastic .She catered for one of our number who is gluten free and for myself as I do not eat red meat. She always provided us with alternatives and little extras. In addition ,she is a lovely person. Finally there was Sofia ,our steward ,what a lovely young woman .She was very efficient and nothing was too much trouble. We visited 5 islands ,we saw loads of wildlife and we were generally lucky with the weather.I would highly recommend the company .My only advisory note would be that if you are tall ,Cabin 2 ,with beds at right angles would not be the best choice.

Hi Emma, following our trip last week, I just wanted to express my gratitude for the wonderful charter cruise with Rob to the inner Hebrides on the Emma Jane.  Nicola, the chef produced the most wonderful culinary delights. The food was absolutely amazing and cooked to an exceptionally high standard.  What an absolute treat.!!  It will always be a memorable fine dining experience and exceeded all of my expectations.  Zoe was an excellent guide oozing enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge of sea life. An absolute treasure.  Sofia was an absolute gem who was friendly and attentive.... and truly went above and beyond to help in any way.  Thank you all so much and I look forward to seeing you again.  Anne Gardiner

Very happy with the itinerary, Skye and Tobermory were a bonus.  We had the best Skipper Rob undoubtedly and probably the best team.  Nicola is first class at fine dining and Sophia a welcoming, cheerful and talented steward and Zoe a bright and intelligent guide and wildlife expert.  Stick with a company that is family run.

Responses to my questions very prompt – even on Sundays! And very clear. The description of the cruise, the facilities on board, and what we could expect to encounter subject to weather and tides was spot-on.  Embarking on the boat was very easy. The scale of the harbour at Oban makes it easily found and accessible. The crew were instantly friendly, welcoming, and clear about keeping us all safe on board. Our luggage was stowed in our cabins with no fuss or effort on our part.  I was amazed how the skipper devised solutions which enabled us to meet our major expectations despite having to wait for seas to calm following a night of strong winds. Scenery was fantastic. Even the fog was atmospheric. Going ashore was always a joy, conducted with expertise by the crew, and being led by Hannah with her unlimited enthusiasm and expert knowledge was not to be missed. Anchorages every night were calm and peaceful. I slept extremely well!  The saloon was a convivial place at all times, especially after supper! The foredeck was great for spotting wildlife or admiring the scenery.  Do it!

Alasdair was excellent and informed us of his plans and why. We had a bit of a blow on the second and third days. Shelter was planned and then he made a long day to the Shiants which were wonderful.  I felt Perry had put a lot of thought into his meals. too much food but not a lot of waste. All 4 crew were excellent. Hannah's enthusiasm and knowledge, Craig's diligence and constant work were great.  This cruise was great because the Crewe and passengers all got on well in a gentle manner. The Crewe commented on this. Everyone was interested in the wildlife and I come from Skye so I loved looking at the islands from a different perspective. This cruise was great because the Crewe and passengers all got on well in a gentle manner. An absolutely unbelievable 10 day Cruise on the Elizabeth G - a great boat. The crew were fantastic and so helpful. The food onboard was 5 star. Stunning scenery with a real close up view of wildlife and fauna and flora. Birdlife on The Shiants was out of this world and Hebrides Cruises get you real up close and personal. As for sea life - Basking Shark, Dolphins, Minke Whales, Porpoise, Seal and much much more were seen on the trip. We would thoroughly recommend anyone who enjoys wildlife and the great outdoors to sign up for the adventure.

This was our third cruise with Hebrides Cruises, and like the previous two it was an excellent trip, and really good fun. The booking process was straight-forward, and the cruise itself lived up to expectations - the skipper and crew worked exceptionally hard to ensure we reached the target destinations by way of a calm passage, and the on-board wildlife guide was brilliant at spotting and identifying the many whales, dolphins, and birds seen on the way. The catering on-board was top-quality. I'd recommend a trip with Hebrides Cruises to anyone interested in the history and wildlife of the Hebrides. The award of 'Scottish Small Family Business of the Year 2023' was well merited.

Skye, the Small Isles and the Shiants

This was our second cruise on the Lucy Mary, so we had high expectations from last time, which were all fulfilled. Abbie was once again our steward, while skipper Lewis, Chef Jeya and Wildlife Guide Linsey were new to us. Our weather was exceptional, with Lewis keeping us well away from any bad stuff. We also achieved our top bucket list item of dolphin bow wave riding, with around 20 dolphins swimming with us on one day and then around 6 on a later day - stupendous. Our fellow travellers were all lovely people, which is such an important factor in these small cruise ships, and it was a nice touch for Lewis and Linsey to join us for our evening meals. Jeya’s food was consistently superb, and Abbie made sure we were always well looked after. Always impressive was the ability of the crew to turn their hand to pretty much any task, which meant that occasional glitches were dealt with smoothly and without fuss. Lynsey in particular was visibly always on the go, cleaning the decks while we breakfasted, guiding us on board and onshore, and helping brief and debrief us at the end of each day. Having such an experienced wildlife guide at your elbow at all times is what really differentiates this cruise from the competition. The whole experience felt like we were very much involved in agreeing or amending the itinerary for the following day, rather than simply being a passenger. We are already booked for a 10 day cruise next year.

Absolutely fabulous. We had some glorious weather. Food was amazing. I will never forget being surrounded by minke whales, playful dolphins and thousands of seabirds including puffins at The Shiants. Our guide Lynsey was so knowledgeable. The skipper Lewis found some wonderful places to anchor and I was able to get quite a few swims in. Our steward Abbie was very attentive and creative especially with the table settings every evening. Cabin was comfy. Here’s to next time

This trip exceeded our expectations because of the islands we visited and the landings we made. We have been trying to visit The Shiants for a year or so and we were delighted that we made it this time. Overall a fantastic trip with great weather. The crew were exceptional both individually and as a team. Lewis as skipper always had our comfort and best interests at heart and clearly explained what he was doing and why when plans had to be tweaked. Jaya’s menus were creative and full of surprises, we ate very well. Abbie looked after us very well from that first cup of tea in the morning through to last orders. Lynsey, who we’ve met on a previous trip, was as good as we remembered. Her knowledge and experience was so helpful in helping us to appreciate and understand what we were seeing. Finally, a great group of fellow passengers who we will happily travel with again. Thank you all for a great trip. Charmaine & John L

I was longing to be aboard “Lucy Mary” again ever since stepping off her at the end of my cruise last September; I had felt surely it couldn’t be as good again - but it was. During the entire trip the 4 crew members worked extremely hard to make sure we had a thoroughly enjoyable time, with enthusiasm, professionalism and friendliness. It was great having Abbie as our charming and efficient steward again: I must mention her inventive table decorations, a beautiful highlight of every dinner time. The other three crew were new to me but outstanding. Jaya created mouth-watering meals and treats, with a zesty approach to the food, and indeed to life in general, which was very appealing. Lynsey as wildlife guide was supremely good, sharing her remarkable knowledge of the area and its wildlife so that we saw, heard and learned about many places, animals, birds and plants which would have gone unnoticed or unidentified had she not been there. All of the wonders we saw would, of course, have been unreachable without Lewis the skipper, who did his utmost to take us to all the places we were hoping to visit - with great success. The glorious weather, coupled with Lewis’s skilful handling of the boat and his careful route planning in conjunction with Lynsey and ourselves, gave us opportunities for reaching stunning destinations. There was plenty of time to savour all the experiences, whether on land by tender trips ashore or at sea by Lewis’s willingness to slow or stop for us to observe dolphins, whales, seals, seabirds. A crew working together for the best possible outcome and an amiable group of fellow passengers, travelling on a delightful boat in an area so rich in natural beauty, gave me another unforgettable cruise. Thanks wholeheartedly and see you next year!

Last year was our first, long awaited trip on Emma Jane. It was an amazing experience, over and above anything we could have hoped for. So on our return we booked this years cruise AND 2025. As skipper James said ‘ you need to do these things while still vertical’! Emma Jane is a beautiful, comfortable vessel to travel on from the well thought out cabins, comfy sofas and books in the salon and multiple outside viewing areas to look out for all the wildlife and scenery. Skipper Charlie found wonderful anchorages, dramatic scenery and safe clean places for the hardy swimmers. Arriving at the Shiants around the north of the islands was a real highlight. This approach allowed us to see the huge and dramatic basalt pillars, that dwarf those at Fingals Cave. Later, with perfect conditions, Charlie and Will ( Guide) took us on the rib to see the formations, caves and birds at really close quarters. Amazing! Will sort out the wildlife at sea and on land with great success. Highlights include both common and bottlenose nose dolphins who came to ride the bow wave. A lovely view of Minke whale. 3 white tailed eagles together on the eastern shore of Raasay and 8 in the sky as we sailed away from The Shiants. Will led us safely on shore trips that were adapted to the ability and wishes of the guests. This includes a dramatic hike up to Hallaig, the abandoned settlement on Raasay. Stunning views in all directions and a golden eagle viewed from above. Charlie (chef, not the shipper!) cheerfully cooked us up 3 lovely meals a day as well of cake for tea, using a great deal of local produce. I loved the fish dishes. She was ably assisted by equally smiley Jasmine, who looked after us, served us meals, made drinks and kept everything spotlessly clean and tidy. It felt as if the whole crew worked together as a well oiled team. I’ve seen it written before on reviews before, but if you are considering a trip with Hebrides Cruises - book it. Will and Sarah

What an amazing holiday. It exceeded our expectations. It was our first visit to Scotland and our first cruise. We were thoroughly spoilt. Chris, the skipper navigated his way around the stunning Isles and lochs ensuring we had every opportunity to spot wildlife whilst respecting the correct distance. Maggie, stewardess, nothing was too much trouble. Her attention to detail was excellent especially her creative table napkin sculptures. Carleton produced the most amazing culinary delights. Top quality dishes from such a small galley. Hannah, our wildlife expert. Her enthusiasm and knowledge was superb. She took time to explain things and made sure everyone was able get good sightings especially of the eagles' nests. She clearly loves her subject. And then the flora and fauna- dolphins, whales, seals, and the numerous species of birds including golden and white tailed eagles. A special mention to Emma and Hannah for dealing with and arranging for our luggage to be reunited with us midway through our cruise. Such a memorable holiday and will hopefully return soon.

She is a beautiful ship, the crew were absolutely wonderful, the food was incredible and the attention to the detail of all our needs was beyond anything we have ever experienced. On top of all that the weather was ridiculously perfect. We loved the islands, they are beautiful and the wildlife information helped us to recognize many species we had never seen before.  It is not possible to express just how perfect the holiday was. Just a big thank you to Lewis, Zoe, Bella, Sian and Jasmine. (In no particular order).  Thank you.

2 May 2024

Hi Emma - My family and I were lucky enough to spend a week on board the Lucy Mary last week (2/5-8/5) and spent it with the most wonderful crew of Lewis, Zoe, Bella, Sian and Jasmine.  I’d like to pass on my thanks to them all.  Their open, friendly demeanour, attention to detail and incredible organisation made the whole experience a total delight.  Each day ran so smoothly that, as guests, all we had left to do was marvel at the beauty of the location and the wlldlife, oh and eat an insane amount of utterly delicious food.  Huge thank you to Zoe for being so available and informative, for gracefully answering our amateur wildlife questions with no flicker to suggest that she had heard them all before.  She heartily joined in our silly family banter, invited us to join in her cetacean watches and politely informed us that there’s no such thing as ‘just a gull’ - only ‘just a dove’ apparently……. Oh and please thank her for being such a great quiz master.  On that note, thank you to Jasmine and Bella, my fellow cohorts on the winning quiz team.   Thank you also to Lewis, he too had to endure some nosy nav questions from me, and did so with huge patience and heaps of information.  His local knowledge and boat handling skills are second to none, I mean we all saw him virtually parallel park Lucy Mary with just a bow thrust nudge, it was a bit special :-)   Please also thank him for his ‘hand in pocket parking’ advice, I have spread it far and wide already and will give it go in the very near future.  And thank him for taking us to the most amazing anchorage spots each night.  Please also thank Jasmine.  She is a wonderful host, her table laying imagination, pebble work and napkin art was just joyful.  She smiled all trip long and made us all feel really comfortable.  Please also thank Bella, the perpetual cleaning machine! Lucy Mary was immaculate, always.  It was gorgeous to hear the team laughing all trip long too, mostly led by Bella, who always seemed to have a grin on her face.  And finally please thank Sian.

I was looking for a small ship cruise to the Hebrides and spent some time surfing the t'interweb, eventually choosing Hebrides Cruises and crossing my fingers.  I now know I got it so right!  Rob kept us so well informed about the weather and its likely impact.  His limitless knowledge meant we made the best of the opportunities - Iona had never looked to lovelier!  Lynsey - well, without her, frankly many of the sightings would have been missed.  I always reckon any holiday is only as good as the guide - and Lynsey is The Best!  I loved my cabin (I was in no 3) - spacious, comfortable, warm, always spotlessly clean. Jaya conjured up such delights, home made bread, soups, biscuits were beyond superb and those feasts in the evening often showcased the Scottish larder - truly remarkable.  It was extra special, even the weather was kind.  And thanks from me to you for the most terrific holiday - exciting, scenic, fun and full of utter deliciousness!

From the first contact to the final farewell, this couldn't have been a better experience. This particular cruise was perfect for me as a novice cruiser who suffers from sea-sickness! I'm now a convert.... six days was enough for my first trip but I'd be delighted to go for longer with Hebrides Cruises now. We were very lucky with the weather - only a day and a half of rain - and the sea was calm. The staff on land and the crew on board looked after us so well. The wildlife guide had an exceptional wealth of knowledge, the bosun could turn his hand to anything from origami napkins to cleaning the anchor chain, the cook should offer master classes in haute cuisine in a tiny galley and the skipper took decisions based on the conditions so that we had the best chance of seeing wildlife. All were professional and considerate, and relaxed. While the space on board is 'compact', it is a charming vessel with everything provided. I can't recommend this cruise highly enough!

This was our first trip with Hebrides Cruises and right from the word go it was clear we had chosen a very professional & client centered operator. From the time of being welcomed by the crew of Elizabeth G and Owner Rob & Emma, at the jetty head to the time of our departure we were extremely well looked after, plus the Scottish clouds parted and we had a wonderful week of sun which simply added to the delights of our adventure. Alasdair as Captain was brilliant, Charlie always cheerfully produced fabulous meals from her galley, Craig as bosun and 'cabin fairy' kept the ship spic and span, and was always charming, and last but not least, Hannah our wild life expert (& fellow Northumbrian) was full of enthusiasm and knowledge, so every day was a school day for us in expanding our knowledge of wildlife in this area. Highlights included puffins on Lunga, Common dolphins in the bow wave, Eagles, Otters and Joanne's birthday (same day as Rob's it turned out!) with a fabulous ship made carrot cake and fizz to welcome us back aboard after a great day ashore on Iona and an interesting ride back in the rib!! As reasonably regular sailors on both larger ships and smaller yachts (crewed by just us!), this was a wonderful way to experience the West coast of Scotland and its many hidden gems. The problem now, is which one to choose next.......

Lunga and its amazing puffin colony were definitely a highlight for us, as this was our first encounter with these beautiful sea parrots. Our crew went out of their way to make sure we got to see as many species of wildlife as possilbe both on sea and during land excursions, and we had amazing experiences visiting Rum, Eigg, Cana and Mull - with dolphins, seals, eagles, a million different types of birds, ducks and geese, and even red deer and the gorgeous Rum ponies. Thanks to the special efforts of our crew, we had a very unique cask-whiskey tasting experience at Tobermory, which we truly cherish. Hebrides Magical Mini-Cruise

19 April 2024

Emma, James and all of the Hebrides Cruises team - thank you for the most wonderful, memorable experience aboard Lucy Mary last weekend on the Hebrides Magical Mini-Cruise. We are missing it all so much already! Every single detail was so perfect, from the minute we stepped on board and were welcomed so warmly by the crew with the lovely Prosecco and canapés to the excitement of setting sail and knowing that we and our cruise companions had all begun a unique adventure together, making lifetime memories in the most tranquil, spiritual setting that would bond us all. Everything felt familiar and like home so quickly but also so far away from our day to day reality which didn’t creep in and disturb us once. We were utterly immersed in the experience and the wildlife aspect was simply phenomenal. I still can’t quite believe we actually experienced those moments. The anticipation of a ‘spot’, seeing a beastie emerge and sharing the wonder of that experience together as a group. Those are etched memories and I know how moved and elated every single person in our group was, time and time again on our trip. Having a pod of common dolphins, followed by bottle nose dolphins bow riding Lucy Mary as we journeyed towards Ardtornish was a moment we will never forget. It was other worldly and really quite emotional. The depth of knowledge and experience James has gave us the experiences we were so lucky to have, and having a wildlife guide on board is one of the most unique aspects of the cruise. James and Bella knew exactly what to look for in the waters which led to a successful spot each time - whales, dolphins, porpoises and all manner of sea birds. We had such lovely cruise companions - we all bonded and became very fond of each other quickly, with Hebrides Cruises creating the foundation for that with the quality of the experience. I hadn't appreciated just how much we would enjoy that aspect, being around people we had never met. It really is such a special part of the experience. The accommodation was so comfortable -

What can I say? There are truly not enough superlatives to describe the amazing experience we had onboard Lucy Mary during our recent cruise. From start to finish, the treatment we received from the crew was first class. The booking process was a dream, with the lovely Emma steering us through the whole thing very professionally, answering all our pre-cruise questions promptly and setting our minds at rest. Once we arrived in Oban, we were greeted on board with champagne and cake (my favourite combo!) and from then on, things just got better and better. Abby, the steward, was attentive, warm, funny and made everyone feel comfortable and cared for at all times. Bella, the wildlife guide was great fun and extremely knowledgable and fantastic at finding us interesting wildlife to observe and learn about - we were lucky enough to see hordes of different species, including minke whales, loads of porpoise, seal, birds galore including sea eagles and my favourite gannets and shearwaters and of course otters! Our chef Carleton was a delight - interesting and funny as well as being the most incredible chef. I think I put on about 3kg during the cruise - my fault entirely, I just couldn't resist anything that came out of his kitchen and had to have second helpings of it all. The cod with a crispy crab crust was just a phenomenon. And of course, can't forget our wonderful skipper James. He gently steered us to all the best spots in weather that wasn't always the easiest to navigate but he made the cruise comfortable and enjoyable at all times. His lifelong love affair with the Hebridean area and with being at sea shines through and you can't help but be caught up in his enthusiasm for boat life and for the incredible surroundings we were in. Jaya prepared the most delicious meals every day - and her fresh-baked cakes and biscuits were always appreciated at afternoon tea. Last but not least, Sophia – always with a beaming smile, making sure the guests wanted for nothing, turning her hand to whatever was required – and ensuring the dining table looked picture-perfect, her napkin folding was a work of art! For all these reasons, we are hoping to book again soon – but this time for 10 days, the 6 nights on board Emma Jane went by all too fast!    Although ours was a rather late booking, it was a simple process, all our enquiries were answered promptly by Emma. We were informed well in advance of all arrangements for boarding and disembarking – and everything went according to plan.  Pre boarding, the crew introduced themselves on the dock and swiftly transported our baggage to the boat.   It was a pleasure to meet Emma as we boarded the boat, by which time all our baggage was already in our cabin.  On disembarking, everything went like clockwork:  by the time we’d all said our farewells, our baggage was on the dockside waiting for us to collect.

Inner Hebrides Big 5 Autumn Wildlife Cruise

30 September 2023

We have recently returned from the 4 night wildlife Inner Hebrides cruise on the Elizabeth G. We so enjoyed the cruise. Our fellow passengers were a delight, so very kind when my husband had difficulty walking half way through a walk ashore. The crew could not have been more helpful, Alistair our Captain and Lindsey our wildlife expert knowing where to go to see as much wildlife as possible and the most beautiful and calm places to anchor for the night. We saw the big 5! Craig, our Bosun was very attentive and generous with the wine! The weather was mostly kind, except whenever we got into the tender it would rain but as soon as we landed it stopped! We have never seen so many gorgeous rainbows. The food was exceptional and so much of it! Charlie, you’re a genius to be able to produce that quality of food in the tiny galley! We were sad when the trip ended, so sad in fact, that we have booked another cruise for next April!

Inner Hebrides Big 5 Autumn Wildlife Cruise

25 September 2023

We were delighted to be able to join the Lucy Mary with friends for a 5 day cruise. The highlights we’d like to share are: • great accommodation and food; • polite, obliging and enthusiastic staff; • an absolute certainty that the safety and comfort of guests is paramount; • guests with mobility issues and dietary requirements are accommodated with care and without fuss; • the extremely knowledgeable wildlife guides make every effort to ensure all guests experience the wonders that the Hebrides can bring; • finally, whilst the weather cannot be controlled, the Skipper will try to adjust the itinerary to make the best of it. We were lucky to be able to capture some sights on film to share, but many of our scenic views and wildlife moments are best stored as delicious memories to be savoured in quiet moments of post-holiday reflection and treasured forever. It is without hesitation that we recommend Hebrides Cruises for an experience of a lifetime which we hope to repeat.

I am actually struggling to find the words to express how wonderful this holiday was and how much we enjoyed ourselves during our 6 nights on Emma Jane. This experience was truely like no other holiday I've ever taken. It was well put together and the crew were ready to adapt plans where necessary. Firstly thanks to Emma for her initial assistance when we were making the decision to book or not, and invaluable help on travel advice. Whether we were lucky, but we joined a lovely group of fellow, like minded passengers to spend our 6 nights with. All the crew, Chris, the skipper, Sofia, the steward, Carlton, the chef, and Will the wildlife expert, were individually lovely, helpful, patient, and excellent in their roles. However, the four of them together formed a competent and well organised team. I noted the concentration required to navigate us through the locks, and attention to our safety and enjoyment at all times. The food was amazing Carlton. Hard to pick my favourite dish but the Caesar salad was a stand out. Will, took us on lovely walks to enjoy beautiful scenery, rivers, locks, lochs, canal, waterfalls, birds and fungi. Chris, calm, caring and confident, but firm if he needed to be. We must, however, mention Sofia in particular. Her attention to detail, demonstration of a variety of skills, one moment doing the ropes on the vessel, the next serving us tea, cake, and Proscecco in the afternoon(could get used to this but things are never the same when you try to re-create them at home). Her flair in creating the most wonderful table decorations. We could go on. We loved it. Thank you so very much.  Cindy Hudson & Andrew Perry

The best way of telling you what a marvellous time I had on this cruise is that I have arrived home and promptly booked another for next year, 8 nights instead of 6, on the “Lucy Mary” again! From ease of booking with Emma to arriving back in Oban on the final day, everything was given careful attention in order to ensure the trip was a special one. The boat, “Lucy Mary”, is extremely comfortable, well-equipped and of a design enabling me to spend hours with binoculars looking out over the sea or mountains in the hope of spotting wildlife, whether outside in the sun or snugly inside in the rain or wind! An important feature is the presence of a wildlife spotter, Indy, whose knowledge and enthusiasm enabled me to notice and identify many animals, birds and plants that I would not have seen by myself. This was also greatly contributed to by skipper Rob’s ability to take us to the ideal places to see the wildlife, as well as beautiful and spectacular scenery and buildings. In addition he chose routes suited to the weather conditions, and ensured that all of our wishes were considered. The food prepared by chef Perry was really excellent, with exceptionally good and varied vegetarian dishes for me. We had beautifully presented fresh fruit included at every breakfast, and fresh cakes or cookies to greet us on our afternoon returns to the boat after onshore visits. These excursions were varied and interesting, with a high degree of flexibility to satisfy all of us. Last but not least, Abbie kept all the accommodation on board clean and neat, adding many nice touches such as prettily-folded napkins, plus all the hard work involved in serving the food, cleaning the cabins and many other tasks. All the crew were friendly, cheerful and skilful. There are many more complimentary things I could say but really I’d just like to thank all of you for a uniquely memorable holiday

Well! Where does one start to describe such a phenomenal adventure.  As a couple of old folk, well into their eighties, with one of us disabled and only recently diagnosed with dementia. You may wonder what on earth were we doing, taking on a  small vessel  wild life cruise into the seas around the Hebrides.  An act of Faith, maybe. Fear not!   This is no ordinary “cruise company”.   Read on,  this is something else.  From the very onset, when first contacting  Emma, (and before realising we had a dementia situation) ,  we were treated with immense respect, given prompt very sincere answers to all our queries and immediately realised we were dealing with a very genuine company and warm people. We could do this! So it proved to be.  All the guidance and joining information was detailed, accurate and very helpful. On arrival at North Pier, Oban, prior to boarding, we were met by the most friendly of people who promptly took our luggage and conveyed it to our boat, LucyMary. And there she was!  The most handsome of vessels, gleaming and awaiting her guests, whilst laid alongside the pontoons.  We felt like royalty.  At the foot of the companionway stood owner Rob,  waiting to greet his guests.  No, not captain, skipper, or the like, simply Rob.  The head of what was for the duration, a close knit group of guests and crew who blended together seamlessly into one very happy family the whole  trip.  The crew of four were simply brilliant.  Starting with Rob, of course. Then in no particular order -  Indie, our extraordinary and knowledgeable naturalist and wild life expert.  Abbie, delightful, ever accommodating stewardess, who looked after everyone with continuous attention. Serving meals, making drinks, tidying cabins, fetching and carrying.  Then , the chef! Perry. Wow, what he produced in the galley was exquisite.  But,  it didn’t stop there. All of the crew joined in where appropriate with any other duties too.

The whole experience was a delight, James, Will, Carlton and Sofia were lovely and the ship and accommodation was great, our cabin (5) was well designed and comfortable with ideal nooks and crannies for storage. We made for a very sociable group and the ambiance was helped by the friendly atmosphere on board.  It was all very enjoyable and the scenery stunning sailing up to the sea lock at Fort William and along the canal and lochs towards Inverness. It is a truly lovely time of year to visit the Highlands and the perspective from water level on the ship was ideal. Will provided an expert guide to the flora and fauna along the way and the walks on shore. Seeing spectacular skeins of Pink Footed Geese on their way to their feeding grounds on the morning of the last day was a particular highlight.  I would not hesitate to recommend the cruise, we both had a lovely time in good company with a delightful and knowledgeable crew.

What a wonderful experience. Ever since we enjoyed a week on Lizzie G as a dive boat in 2014, we wanted to return and renew our acquaintance with her on a wildlife cruise. And what a week - it exceeded all our expectations. From the first welcome with Prosecco and amazing scones, to the last sad farewell, we had a fabulous time. Our fellow guests provided lovely company and the crew - whose love and enthusiasm for what they did shone through - looked after us royally. Hannah was an excellent wildlife guide, pointing out the wide range of wildlife we were lucky enough to see, Callum ‘glass of wine anyone’ a caring and attentive Bosun, Charlie provided us with superb Cordon Bleu meals throughout our stay and Alasdair as Skipper was not only superb at ensuring we had the best opportunities to see the wildlife, his company and story telling in the eve were great fun. The range of wildlife as noted every eve by Hannah was impressive, highlights had to be Sea Eagles just ‘posing’ for us as well as flying and passing food, Red Deer stag bellowing on the skyline, other sea birds too numerous to mention, and as for the dolphins….! A trip like this is always weather dependent, and although the elements were against us towards the end of the trip, the itinerary was adapted so we missed none of the highlights. In short - an outstanding week. Thanks to all who made it so.

Oh dear. I had an incredible time on the Emma Jane last year, such a life altering experience that I was just a little nervous; it couldn’t possibly be as good again, could it? But it was…no, it was better. It might feel like happy accident to get good conditions, find amazing sealife, or really feel at home on a boat with twelve strangers, but of course it’s not; it skill, experience, planning, hard work and kindness. This is family, a family business that has created an ethos and atmosphere that flows through the crew (on shore and at sea) so that you feel totally at ease as you are taken by the hand and shown the wonders of the Hebrides. Vanessa, the steward, was bright, attentive and lovely. Chef Nicola cooked and baked delicious and varied food and is the sweetest and happiest person. Lynsay, wow, capable, knowledgeable and a hawkeye that never failed to spot or identify the multitudinous sealife, plus she’s the beautiful artist on display all over the boat! And Skipper Bren, so relaxed and accomplished that everyone assumed it was his umpteenth season on the Emma Jane…I hope he’s tempted back many more times. Thank you so much for showing me such incredible places, giving me unique experiences and indulging a chatty singleton who kept peeling off to sing in caves or check out the Mishnish’s 80-/ and random locals! I really appreciated the care, attention and honesty of the crew, they clearly love their jobs, had endless patience and are really interesting people to talk with. I can’t wait to come back and have booked another cruise aboard the Emma Jane; can it possibly be as good as this one? I’m not nervous. x

We were so glad that we decided to join a wildlife cruise with your company. Not only did we sail in extreme comfort and luxury aboard the 'Lucy Mary' but we did it with a lovely group of fellow travellers who proved great company throughout, sharing stories and experiences in a very convivial manner. All the crew members were friendly, knowledgable and approachable in every aspect of their respective duties. The anchorages, scenery and on-shore trips were excellent with the weather playing its part too. A wide range of wildlife was spotted in the water and in the air but a highlight had to have been the feeding frenzy witnessed one very calm, surreal day when the sea literally erupted around the ship with dozens of dolphins, minke whales and gannets to name but a few...truly outstanding. Numerous photographs and videos were taken and will provide a fantastic record of our adventure at sea. Each evening it was a pleasure to be seated at the beautifully dressed table and anticipate the next gourmet meal accompanied by the obligatory, excellent house wine! This was our first cruising holiday but it will certainly not be our last. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a special trip which exceeded our expectations in every way. The 'icing on the cake' had to be the appearance of the Northern Lights on our last night aboard – a magical finale to a wonderful holiday. We absolutely loved every minute aboard this beautiful ship .

Whale watching in the Northern Minch

28 August 2023

We set off from Oban in the Elizabeth G under the expert skippering (is that a word ?) of Alistair, Bosun Craig was ever attentive providing drinks and excellenttable service, Zoe our guide pointing out various wildlife species and Charle our Chef providing delicious meals and snacks all throughout the cruise. I would nominate Charlie for Master Chef. Alistair plotted our course northwards, we saw Dolphins on our first day, poor Zoe couldn't get me to say pods, "herds of them" was my cry, it was amazing that these highly intelligent creatures would actively go out of their way to interact with us, it happened every day and our faces ached with the smiles these fantastic animals generated. We saw Minke whales almost every day as well The Elizabth G may be 60 years old but she is in excellent condition, strong, reliable, steady in a strong wind and swell because of her stabilisers, she has character and a beauty all of her own. She is big enough to give you confidence that she can tackle what mother nature throws at her but small enough to anchor in some truly amazing places. Every day you go ashore and explore another new location. (Weather permitting) Every member of the crew is dedicated to making sure you get the most out of your cruise, excellent food, excellent care, super knowledge of the flora and fauna. You go to bed every evening with your knowledge expanded, your spirits lifted. If you want to see Dolphins, Whales, Harbour Porpoises, Eagles, Shags, Gannets, Manx Shearwater, Gulls of every type, the list of encounters is limited only by the time/length of your cruise, sign up for a cruise as soon as you can. Alistair, the skipper has the utmost respect for the wildlife you encounter, every encounter is on the animals terms, their safety takes priority, he lets the wildlife come to the boat rather than pursuing it. His storytelling is wonderful, every evening he and Zoe join you and he shows you where you have been, where you are going and what weather to expect, there is even a knowledge test at the end o

Thank you to all who worked so hard to make my holiday all I could have wished it to be. The rest of the guests were good company and fun to be around. Yoga sessions well thought out, varied and fun. I especially enjoyed the time our skipper landed us all in remote and stunning locations. One of the most memorable places being the Isle of Gunna. This was where we were surprised after walking the dunes and enjoying yoga, to a birthday picnic of bubbly and cake on the beach. Thanks Sarah for having a birthday at just the right time. I haven’t felt so at peace yet so invigorated for a while I feel so blessed to have had such an experience of wilderness, sea, sand and amazing food. Our skipper was fantastic, scanning the horizon for wild life and things of interest while keeping us all safe. Seeing the area around Mull, Staffa (another memorable day), Inch Kenneth, Cairns of Coll and Ulva in all their glory from the sea was unforgettable. I enjoyed the week so much that I have booked a trip for my husband and me in 2025, on the Emma Jane with the same skipper, can’t wait.

We have nothing but the highest praise for the whole experience. From the whales, dolphin and porpoise sightings while enroute, to the flora and fauna we saw while ashore in the most spectacular locations, this was a most thrilling trip. I will add that the experience was undoubtedly enhanced by the crew, with James ensuring that we had the optimum cruising conditions and Indy being a font of knowledge way beyond his years while explaining what we saw.  I cannot say enough about the hospitality on board. From James to Abbie, Sam to Indy the crew were so welcoming. From the moment Abbie offered us a welcoming drink on first boarding to the Carrot cake and Prosecco on the beach in Muck, we felt that we were well taken care of throughout. Indeed, the quality and variety of the food meant that we looked forward to every meal. I must say a particular thanks for the surprise chocolate cake arranged to help us celebrate our 42nd Wedding Anniversary. This was a lovely thought and much appreciated!  The was nothing that the crew could have done to make this a better experience. We were sad when the trip came to an end and felt that we had one of the best experiences with a caring crew, and companiable fellow cruisers. All in all, a most memorable and enjoyable week.  I would only have two words to say to anyone thinking of booking with Hebrides Cruises: “Do it”.

Private Charter 10 Nights

4 August 2023

Dear Emma! On behalf of the tour group who used the Emma Jane as a private charter from August 4th to August 14th, 2023 from Oban for 10 days, I would like to write you a few lines. All 10 fellow travelers agree that the trip is one of the most beautiful experiences of our lives. These include the highly interesting destinations such as St Kilda, Mingulay and Canna, which were headed for. This includes the ship Emma Jane, which we really liked with its facilities such as the hot tube, the observation deck and the common rooms. However, we found the crew of the Emma Jane to be particularly positive. The captain performed his duties in an exemplary manner. A daily highlight was the daily joint evening meeting with him. Our marine biologist gave us a competent explanation of the animal world we had experienced. In addition, he was a very pleasant companion on our group's excursions. The steward was not only extremely polite, but always made sure that we lacked nothing. It was often his inquiries as to whether we weren't missing something that made the day even more pleasant. If perhaps one or the other guest had doubts about the quality and taste of the Scottish cuisine before the trip, these concerns were quickly obsolete. The daily meal was an absolute highlight of each day. The performance of the chef cannot be overestimated. As the person who initiated the trip in Berlin, who is a lifetime member of Historic Scotland and a lifetime member of the National Trust, I am very glad that the other traveling companions thanked me several times for taking the initiative for the trip together have. I hereby pass on my thanks to Hebrides Cruises and the crew of the Emma Jane.

All the crew members were very personable from James on the wheel, Will and Ruari as guides, Sam the cook and Abbie as our hostess. We had the great experience of having Fingal's Cave Cave on Staffa to ourselves as James made sure we got to the island well before the tour boats arrived - of all the places we were brought, this stood out on its own. For me, Lunga was amazing there being so, so many birds present and being able to get really close to Puffins. We were spoiled with Sam's fantastic cooking and also his willingness to work with stuff we foraged both on the shore and also on land. Dear Emma, It was lovely to meet you briefly both before and after our recent cruise - Fiona and I had such a wonderful time, the fellow passengers were great company but what really made the trip was the fantastic crew, James (for the first 2 days), Bren, Zoe, Hannah and Charlie. They were so professional but also very personable and we could not have asked for better care (or indeed better food when it came to Charlie!). The cruise gave some spectacular highlights but for me the encounter with the humpback whale on the return leg was amazing but even better was the sunset off the Cairns of Coll - the evening meal had just finished when Bren came to announce that the sunset promise to be spectacular. I spent a good hour on the top deck photographing the beauty of the sunset but was aware of something special as Zoe, Hannah and Bren remained on top and there was total silence as we reflected on the profoundness of the scene.

St Kilda and the isles of the Outer Hebrides

3 July 2023

Our most enjoyable ten days ever on Scotland's West Coast. We saw countless Gannets, Fulmars, Puffins and large numbers of Dolphins. Manx Shearwaters, Guillemots and Razorbills joined in as did Skuas, Shags and Cormorants. And on our return past Ardnamurchan several Minke whales came to visit. Chris, the skipper, skilfully adjusted our itinerary to make the best of some changeable weather so we managed to reach both the Shiant islands and St Kilda as well as interesting anchorages on the way. Lynsey's keen eye kept us alert to every sighting, Greg spoiled us with imaginative dishes and Bea looked after us with a never-ending supply of Prosecco and cake. Utterly delightful.

The cruise far exceeded our expectations as did the weather! James was an excellent captain and we felt safe in his capable hands navigating through some sometimes very challenging channels. Guide Lynsey's enthusiasm was infectious and informative and there were many wildlife highlights both at sea and on land. Undoubtedly getting up close to the pod of Killer Whales was the ultimate highlight. Chef Jaya produced some wonderful meals and Bea did an excellent job serving us at the dining table and cleaning our cabins. The boat was much more roomy than we expected and our cabin was very cosy. The viewing areas were brilliant and there was plenty of space for both passengers and crew to enjoy. We will be back!

Emma is the consumate professional in every detail covering the booking of any cruise, and dealing with any queries etc, and as a bonus she performs all this in such a friendly way !  The Hebrides Cruises team have this down to a fine art, the welcome is first class, and the handling of the luggage etc is so reassuring. Likewise, the assistance given on leaving the cruise is above and beyond, offers of help arranging taxis etc is always there, and the luggage is carried up to the end of the pier for all.  That said, leaving the Emma Jane is always the least enjoyable part of any cruise, its like leaving good friends !  This was a wonderful cruise, helped somewhat by the glorious weather, but it was the pace of the whole thing that was absolute perfection.  No having to dash anywhere, no trying to catch up, just a thoroughly laid back and ultimately very enjoyable cruise.  Yes, the wildlife was unforgettable, but the scenery, and the history combined with the willingness of the crew to add that cherry to the top of the cake on a daily basis made this the perfect cruise – even those less interested in wildlife would enjoy this cruise I’m sure. The crew excelled in absolutely everything, the meals were sublime, the service/care provided by the crew was I believe, unbeatable, and everything was clean and in the right place. AS ALWAYS !  Yes, there are other vessels offering perhaps similar-looking cruises, but look a little deeper, check the reviews, and if possible, check the smiles of the guests as they finish their cruise.  I’m lucky enough to have been on a few Hebrides Cruises adventures now, and one of the more telling things is the number of repeat customers that keep coming back.   I think that speaks volumes !

We just wanted to say how wonderful last week was on the Emma Jane.  Skipper Chris and Lynsey devised an excellent itinerary. Jaya’s food was amazing and Bee the perfect hostess. The laughter from the galley was a delight even though we didn’t have a clue what they were talking about!  The weather was wonderful and the wildlife beyond expectation. The humpback whale making a guest appearance couldn’t have been better timed.  Lynsey jumping around the deck with sheer excitement was also quite a joy! Thank you once again to everyone involved with the cruise. Scenery was absolutely stunning. Our skipper, Rob, used his extensive experience to create wonderful daily itineraries to discuss & review. The variety of onshore trips to the Small Isles & Skye was magical. An extra hour on Muck, Rum & Canna to walk & explore a wee bit more would have been welcome.  Overnight anchorages were beautiful, sheltered & peaceful.  Apart from the Small Isles, my highlight was watching the leaping dolphins & harbour porpoises. Will, our wildlife guide, was a walking source of knowledge.  The crew were welcoming, knowledgeable & attended to our every need with care. All of the crew had a good sense of humour so there was a holiday atmosphere & fun, as well as time to reflect.  Phoebe’s cooking is divine - it was such a luxury to have home made gluten free fare. If she has time to email the rhubarb tart & pecan bisc recipe that would be great.  Bea is a hard working bundle of fun - a great housekeeper & hostess.  It was so easy to book & pay. Emma emailed clear & timely information. When I phoned with a question she was very helpful. Treat yourself to the trip of a lifetime. Just do it!

All superb. Chris even took us to my favourite anchorage on Rona and loitered where I had once seen an eagle’s nest. My special wish was to see the Summer Isles after first looking down on them in 1974! They were as magical as I had thought they must be. Each day was organized to make the very best of what the islands can offer. Private facilities are very good, and I love “Sea Kelp” toiletries.  I really appreciated the new seating forward which was really comfortable. The crew all seemed to be very happy in their roles which made me feel comfortable with them. Hannah’s enthusiasm was infectious.  Don’t hang about, just BOOK if you can find a space.

But our tour aboard Elizabeth G still exceeded our expectations. We got to visit the amazing Shiant Isles and spend a night there. The crew simply couldn’t do enough for us. Our skipper Alasdair, a West Coast man born and bred, knew the area intimately and, as well as getting us to the Shiant Isles, found us some idyllic spots including Tarbet in Loch Nevis. Craig the Bosun - a total legend. Zöe - what knowledge, and what patience. Phoebe - had to be kidding when she said she’d never cooked in a galley before. I recently had the pleasure of embarking on an unforgettable cruise to the Hebrides Cruises ( Skye, Small Islands, and the Shiants, in Scotland ( May 13-21, 2023), and I must say it was an experience that exceeded all expectations. The 8-day journey was filled with breathtaking scenery, fascinating insights, and a genuine sense of camaraderie among the 8 participants and 4 staff members on board.  One of the highlights of this cruise was undoubtedly the exceptional staff. From the knowledgeable and enthusiastic naturalist to the experienced skipper, each member of the team showcased a remarkable dedication to our well-being and enjoyment throughout the trip. The naturalist's expertise and passion for the islands were evident in every interaction, making each wildlife sighting and nature excursion a truly enriching experience. The skipper's lifelong knowledge of the islands and the sea, along with his emphasis on safety, instilled a sense of confidence and allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Hebrides.  Not to be forgotten is the cook, whose culinary skills transformed each meal into a delightful gastronomic experience. Not only were the dishes healthy and delicious, but they were also beautifully presented, showcasing the cook's artistic talents. Finally, and not any less significant, was the boat swain's excellent customer service, always attentive to our needs and ensuring our comfort throughout the journey. His prompt response to any request with a touch of his humor, further added to the overall exceptional service on board. What  set this cruise apart was the intimate atmosphere created by the small group size and the daily rituals shared among the participants. The shared adventures and delicious meals fostered a sense of closeness and allowed for meaningful connections to be formed. As always, the crew were brilliant and always helpful - particularly to those of us with creaky knees! James, thank you so much for the wooden Step of Stability - I can't emphasise enough what a huge difference it made to me when getting in and out of the tender. Our first but not last cruise , much delayed due to COVID but we got there in the end! A total “ wow” from start to finish , from the moment we boarded we knew that this was going to be special. As the cruise progressed out from Oban in the sun , with some fizz and cake the scene was set. Having such a knowledgeable crew was great , we felt in very safe hands so for small boat novices this was a great plus. Then , the wildlife, scenery , anticipation , meals and great company just made it perfect. Even the odd wet day didn’t detract, we managed to land on all the Islands, saw the most spectacular birdlife at The Shiants, a Minke “ lunge” feeding on the way, White Tailed Eagles , Dolphins , Seals and even the very rare Jennifer Saunders creature! Nothing was too much for the crew, they looked after us beautifully, with great patience ..we ask lots of questions..a great group of people. Thanks so much for making this such a memorable experience , we have already booked for next year...or as Skipper James said..” Do it whilst you are still vertical”! Will and Sarah Walker-Smith

The scenery was fantastic. Will was always on the lookout, we saw dolphins off Muck, minke whales off the northern coast of Skye, white tailed eagles in the sky, and got up close to puffins and razorbills on the Shiants. Not forgetting the spectacular geology, flora and fauna of the islands. The food prepared by Jaya and served by Beatrice was outstanding; we could not have asked for better. They even made a celebration cake for us. Trips ashore each day and guided walks were tailored to individuals capability. Chris, James and Will were only too willing to share their local knowledge and expertise. I have long wanted to visit the Scottish Isles. A friend of mine recommended Hebrides Cruises and, since my husband gets seasick just looking at the ocean, I decided to travel alone. How fortunate, then, to have both delightful fellow guests and the most delightful of crews imaginable. The boat herself, the Elizabeth G, proved to be staunchly seaworthy and decidedly comfortable. AND she came equipped with a simply marvelous chef, Sarah, who fed us like royalty. Thank goodness for the daily walks that enabled us to eat most of what she presented. I think we saw every seabird in the book, my favorite -- no surprise here -- the adorable puffins who are much smaller in real life than I had imagined. We also saw numerous minke whales and porpoises, as well as eagles and red deer at a distance. Loved the ruined nunnery on Iona. Very atmospheric. Was awed by Fingles Cave and enchanted by the beauty of the isles themselves. With deep thanks to ALL the crew and to Hebrides Cruises which is both warm and highly professional.

This cruise is the shortest one they do but we still managed to get in a lot of walking in some beautiful locations. We were privileged to have two very close sightings of wild otters on land eating their catch! The crew were as helpful and attentive as ever. I think the fact that out of the four cabins on the Elizabeth G, three were people who were returning to the ship, including myself, which proves what a wonderful experience it is. It was also nice to have a couple on board who hadn't sailed with Hebrides before as they were so enthusiastic. A friendly group, lovely locations and brilliant crew - what more could you ask for!

Tell you something you may not know. The rise through upsy locks is extraordinary, a body of water controlled. Then the down-the-stairs feel as you descend to the wide mouth of Loch Ness. Ok, that's one thing, two actually, but how you traverse this is not the whole picture. The thought and the planning that goes into every minute detail is diverse, dynamic and delicious. From Emma and back (for she is the pilot) we have Captain 'Calm' who deals with everything on board, Ash who makes light of all her work as steward, Will, guide, who knows the over and under story and Jordan who should cook for heaven, all of them showing such grace. I loved watching each member of this team step out of their roles when required. For any unsure of bumpy seas, this one is for you. Ps, bring swimwear. The hot tub affords the best of sunset views.

This was my third cruise on lovely Emma Jane but the first without my husband Tom, who so enjoyed the previous two but who sadly died recently. I couldn't have picked anything better for my first time away without him. Boarding Emma Jane was like meeting an old friend again. Huge thanks to the lovely crew, Colin, Lynsey, Zoe and Jaya who were so kind and hardworking and who made the cruise a wonderful experience. Also to James and Emma for their sympathy and warm welcome and to my fellow passengers who were such fun to be with. The food is great, the wildlife and scenery spectacular but it's the people who make Hebrides Cruises so special and why I'll be back next year!

The holiday of a life-time. I loved every minute. Obviously the views and islands were amazing but the boat and the especially the crew were amazing also. Angus, Will, Callum and Charlie made us feel part of their boating family and we all entertained each other over dinner in the evenings with our stories and jokes. The other passengers were great and we continue to send pictures and memories to each other on our specially set up WhatsApp group. As a complete non - sailor, I felt safe at all times with Angus our skipper, and I relished the adventure. Will, our wildlife expert, made sure that we witnessed some spectacular events, including a couple of white tailed Eagles; Dolphins sporting with us on the bow wave; and Gannets showing their skills diving for mackerel. Callum was lovely, always attentive to our needs and always smiling, filling up our glasses, bringing us tea on deck without spilling any. ( How did he do that?) And Charlie, our Chef, wow the food was superb, what a star. I am hoping to start painting the fabulous sea scapes very soon while the warm glow of the experience is still in my veins. Thank you for a very special time.

We found the whole process very easeful and Emma just lovely.  All was managed beautifully with weather, conditions and the passengers. A great balance, not too long at sea and going ashore felt timely and open, not over controlled. Our wishes and mobility always explored and agreed upon. Excursions agreed not imposed.  We loved our cruise so much, the fellow passengers especially will become lifelong finds. May we make a special mention of the crew. ALL were such a delight, exceptional in their kindness, organisation and knowledge. We will miss them too and we must say Will in his unassuming quiet way seemed to have a breath of knowledge that was amazing ! Callum a young enthusiastic positive guy that will be a total success in life and Angus….what can we say a Chapter in his own right wonderful skipper and person.

We went to St Kilda, it involved 3 passages.   Rob did his best for us both going out and the first leg back for what must have been a very tiring day for him ending 0100. St Kilda was very interesting. Generally, we were looked after very well indeed by all four crew members who showed amazing flexibility in being quite happy to take on any job that needed doing. Rob must be a very good leader I think! The food was superb, wildlife commentaries so conscientiously delivered, and Craig particularly demonstrated such thoughtfulness and patience. I did so much too enjoy chatting to Rob in the wheelhouse about diving generally and of course the SBS and Royal Marines. So I think you and Rob, Emma, run a brilliant cruise. What a pity you are so far from Salisbury Best wishes, Rupert

It did what is said on the tin! An amazing experience with multiple sightings of fin whales (the second largest whale on the planet), humpbacks, minke whales, porpoises, many dolphins converging on the Emma Jane to ride our bow-wave, with white-tailed sea eagles, otters and deer to complete our adventure. The crew was unfailingly helpful while being very efficient and as enthusiastic as their passengers. Super food, spotlessly clean accommodation and like-minded fellow travellers. Fantastic!

The cruise of a lifetime on a fine wee ship with a first-class crew! Rob, our Skipper, was prepared to discuss our ambitions and was very flexible - nothing was too much trouble. Craig (Bosun) tended to our every whim always unobtrusive but always there at the right moments. Sarah's cooking was exceptional and we looked forward to every meal and were extremely spoiled! The irrepressible Zoe, our wildlife expert for the trip, taught us a great deal and was enormous fun! The whole crew made this a wonderful experience and we hope they enjoyed the trip as much as we did. This exceeded our expectations and we reached St Kilda!

Whale watching in the Northern Minch

20 August 2022

My long-anticipated cruise on the Emma Jane exceeded all expectations! The weather was superb with glassy seas much of the time. James and Lynsey were amazing at spotting wildlife and getting the ship close-enough for the most incredible viewing of two humpback whales and up to four simply enormous fin whales off the east coast of Lewis. We saw literally hundreds of common dolphin (many deliberately joining us for a spot of free bow-riding), a pod of Risso's dolphins (with tiny calves), nearly a dozen different white-tailed eagles, three otters, and hundreds of assorted seabirds. Chef Jordan produced five-star meals every single day and Bosun Ashley made sure the ship was sparklingly clean all of the time. We almost ran out of prosecco wine, which was produced whenever we had some special sighting to celebrate; in other words, practically every day! Thank you to all four wonderful staff for creating lifelong memories of what even James & Lynsey admitted was one of the best cruises they'd ever experienced.

This was an amazing adventure that exceeded all expectations. The beauty of the Hebrides is legendary, but for us this trip was enhanced by a great crew. Rob's quiet leadership was evident in the way the whole team worked brilliantly together. His ability to judge the weather in getting us to St. Kilda was one of the highlights of the trip. We covered a lot of 'sea", saw many of the stunning islands and Rob always found a beautiful, quiet mooring each evening. Craig provided such excellent service in a professional yet warm and friendly way. Sarah's cooking was just amazing and every meal was delicious - gosh we were spoiled. Learning and experiencing the wildlife of the Islands was such a remarkable aspect of the whole cruise and we were so lucky having Zoe as our wildlife expert. Her knowledge is amazing as is her eyesight!! She was always vigilant and a great guide on the Islands. This was such a memorable week with a super team. Nothing was too much trouble. All absolutely wonderful! The crew – Skipper Angus, boatswain Callum, chef Charlie and guide Sam – were friendly, courteous, and 100% competent at all times, and simply great company, in whom we had complete confidence. Angus skilfully navigated us around scenic and wildlife-rich sites that were more or less sheltered from the somewhat persistent south-westerlies, with tranquil anchorages, and was always willing to let us peer at his seabed charts along our route (Loch Sunnart > N. Ardnamurchan > Inverie > Rum > Tobermory > Strontian > Sunnart > Ulva > around S. Mull, including Iona, to Lochbuie, then Loch Spelve > Oban). Lots of enjoyable walks along the way, enlivened by Sam’s amazing ability to spot wildlife and his encyclopaedic knowledge thereof – a highly experienced guide who added enormously to our enjoyment. Charlie magicked up delicious, wholesome meals in her tiny galley, and Callum got us safely anchored, on and off the tender and completed the cheerful company. Great Team!

The islands we visited, including Eriskay, Taransay, Monach, Rum, Canna etc were unforgettable, but to reach the pinnacle of the enigmatic islands, St Kilda, was purely magical. The history of this island is unique and only when you get up close can you bring the stories to life - it is really a must-see destination. Personal thanks to Emma, Colin, Richie, Will, Michelle and Ashleigh, both on and offshore cannot be underestimated - all were simply brilliant and we appreciate all they did for us. If you are thinking of a wildlife adventure in comfy surroundings with some top-notch expertise and restaurant-quality food, then look no further than Hebrides Cruises. We hope to come back in the not-too-distant future! Thank you all again for making the trip such a memorable one, never to be forgotten. PS thanks also to Peter May, author, who also helped us to understand the history of the islands (albeit within fictional settings) - his books of the area are well worth a read.

Thanks too to Elizabeth G for being such a safe and reliable vessel. We wish the weather had been kinder but we always were able to take advantage of the trips ashore and saw some superb woldlife.  We really enjoyed Bumble's great cooking and Zoë's excellent wildlife knowledge. Craig was amazing in the way he switched roles seamlessly and helped with the trips ashore. Rob's seamanship and experience was greatly admired and no more so than the day he responded to the Mayday call.  He was also great to chat to and kept us amused in the wheelhouse on long wet passages with tales of colourful characters from his decades of association with the sea.  It was an amazing experience - thank you.

Bumble never ceased to produce wonderful meals; Craig turned from his anchor to cabin duties with amazing good will and skill, while Zoe had excellent recall on birds and was an attentive companion on shore, a really fine wildlife spotter.  We had the added excitement of rescuing the yacht in trouble off Tobermory in which Rob applied all his skill and experience. Please pass on our gratitude to Rob in due course.

St Kilda and the isles of the Outer Hebrides

Unfortunately our trip coincided with the most prolonged strong winds for twenty five years, which made the crossing to St. Kilda impossible. Nevertheless our skipper, James, made the best use of both wind and sea conditions and managed to get us over to the Outer Hebrides when other operators had been unable to do so. Taking advantage of the islands themselves we sailed almost the entire length of the archipelago, from Harris to Mingulay, going ashore on Eriskay, Vatersay, Harris and Mingulay. James also attempted to get us over to the Shiants, but we had barely cleared Scalpay when it became obvious to everyone that the conditions made this too dangerous. Despite these setbacks we had an interesting and enjoyable trip and were very grateful to James for what he enabled us to experience. We have nothing but praise for the way in which we were looked after on board by the rest of the crew; Viv served up a series of excellent meals (I still dream about her pork!), Charlotte was constantly busy seeing to our every need, and Will kept us alert, both on board and ashore, to any wildlife that was around and provided a wealth of information on our walks. All four crew members were a delight to sail with and I am only sorry that we had such a short time to say goodbye to them.

Idyllic Islands: Mull, Iona, Staffa & the Treshnish Isles

23 April 2022

This must be one of the most relaxing holidays I have ever been on. A lifelong ambition was fulfilled be visiting Staffa and seeing Fingal's Cave and it was every bit as spectacular as I had hoped. Not only did we walk down the route to it to look into it but, thanks to Chris judging the tide to be right, he was able to get us right inside it. Iona and its abbey were impressive too of course and being able to land on Lunga in the Treshnish Islands and see the seabird colonies - puffins galore - was equally marvellous. The sail round Mull was an eye-opener too, seeing lochs from the sea rather than from the land. They were wonderful locations to spend the nights. And the weather was glorious. The wildlife was in abundance too with lots of seabirds and seals and good sightings of cetaceans. Bottle-nosed dolphins were the first up to bow-wave and we also had 4 or 5 Minke whales fishing and a few porpoises, but the most spectacular were over 100 Common Dolphins which came leaping from all directions to accompany us for over an hour. The hospitality on board was as friendly as ever on a Hebrides Cruises's trip thanks to Chris, Craig, Zoe and Sian with her delicious meals. Add to that very compatible fellow-travellers and no WiFi (so no gloomy news) and this was a holiday to be long treasured in the memory.

Everything exceeded our expectations. The crew seemed to genuinely enjoy the cruise and took care of our needs and wants easily; it felt that we were with friends. Was wonderful to eat all the wonderful and tasty food - It was a pleasure to have James and Linsey join us at dinner!  Appreciated being able to drop our luggage off earlier in the day and the info re parking. I was apprehensive due to my fear of water however the crew were most understanding and made me feel safe. By the end of the cruise we both felt so at ease and were enjoying such a wonderful experience that neither of us wanted to leave.

Thank you for another brilliant cruise. We visited some lovely small islands during this trip and saw a lot of wildlife including minke whales, loads of dolphins including 3 separate groups bow riding with us and harbour porpoises plus otters, sea eagles and golden eagles. Our guide Conor was brilliant spotting wildlife and his plant knowledge matched any encyclopedia as he gave us an overview on them all along with the geology of the region. Craig, our Bosun, was really attentive with looking after us all, Sian's meals were always a treat whilst keeping within the several dietary requirements onboard and Chris, our Skipper, took us to some wonderful places and always found a beautiful anchorage for us each night. Onshore Emma sorted out all of the administration and arrangements quickly and kept us up to date with the trip details. Nothing was too much for her as she also helped out with a car transfer suggestion when the usual travel plans were difficult due to flight changes. Another perfect trip thank you to you all....

The service provided by Cat was brilliant, she was so attentive from morning till night, a true credit to the company. Our accommodation in the master suite was clean and comfortable. Dear Emma - We just want to say a heart-felt ‘Thank You’ for such a wonderful experience! From the friendliness and confidence of the crew (a special thanks to Craig for putting me straight on the number of nights!!!) to the stunning spectacle of dozens of leaping dolphins and the knowledge of the ‘frequent flyers’ who obviously love travelling with you - truly unforgettable!   Chris’s experience inspires confidence and his easy (to our eyes!) practicality and knowledge of the area are awesome. Alexa is a font of knowledge and we wouldn’t have seen half the things we did without her pointing them out to us. Especially the difference between the different cetaceans! Tracking two male Orca added a thrill too! Sian’s cooking should also get a mention - it’s amazing how she served up so many great dishes in such a small space. All we have to worry about now is how to shrink waistlines…I’m running out of superlatives so again many thanks for the experience - I think it’s fair to say that Whale Watching in the Northern Minch is a roaring success!  Hope to see you again in the future!

What a wonderful cruise ! Skipper James and his crew took us around the enchanting Small Isles plus the impressive Loch Skavaig on Skye in whichever order the weather dictated in order to give us the best opportunity to make successful landings and of course, a peaceful nights sleep. All the Islands had their own character, making them all memorable in their own way, difficult to pick a favourite, but I did feel Canna was a special place ! My fellow guests were lovely company, sharing many a story, and many a laugh, and I know they all enjoyed themselves just as I did. It never ceases to amaze me how the team at Hebrides Cruises deliver such fabulously enjoyable cruises. Everything is done to the highest standard, and yet the crew make it look so easy, something akin to the swan sailing serenely along the surface, whilst behind the scenes the legs are paddling like crazy ! James is the perfect skipper, Emma and Helen, chef and steward, just made every minute of our time on the Emma Jane an absolute pleasure with wonderful food and immaculately clean cabins, the most amazing dinner tables, and our every whim catered for, Zoe was our ever vigilant Guide, I don’t think even she could believe all the cetaceans almost queuing up to perform for us on the sail back from Eigg ! And finally, pulling all of this together, looking after us as we booked and queried and pondered, making sure everything was at hand and on the ship, we have to say a big thankyou to Emma onshore. Thankyou all, you’re an amazing team !! I will, of course, be back !!

Wildlife sightings were exceptional including all the bird life that we expected, plus bonuses like Snowy owl, Humpback whale, Sunfish, Risso’s dolphin, Minke whale and very close encounters with a large pod of common dolphins. All of these were made possible by the local knowledge and skill at spotting of the crew. The cruise was excellent. St Kilda is breath taking for its geology, bird life and mysterious historic buildings. Gill and I quite spontaneously both compared its haunting atmosphere with Machu Picchu.  Rob the captain took us as close as possible to some wonderful bird covered cliffs, stacks and caves and homed in on bird flocks, seals, minke whales, dolphins, otters and other wildlife sights whenever he glimpsed them.  We enjoyed walking on Hirta and the other islands where we saw so many wildflowers. We were lucky to see the St Kilda mouse and wren although TV enthusiasts might consider the Balamory cat more important.  I was surprised to learn that the crew of four had not all worked together many times as they formed such a well co-ordinated team. All the passengers got along well.  Rob the captain seemed to know the islands in detail and is obviously a man of many accomplishments but still seemed happy to help serve meals. Sian, the lady chef, produced very fine meals and evening dinners were a culinary and social joy. Craig seemed to be everywhere helping and Zoe the naturalist never stopped looking for wildlife and pointing it out from the boat and when she guided us on the islands.  We are both somewhat stiff jointed but with a little help we had no trouble with beach landings. We slept in one of the two smaller cabins. There was no space to spare but we quickly made ourselves at home and were very comfortable. The little wet room worked well.  We can happily recommend Hebrides Cruises to anybody.  Thanks to all you all.

Just returned from our second successful trip to St Kilda on the Elizabeth G. It was lovely to be greeted by the familiar faces of Rob and Craig from our previous trip along with naturalist Zoe and chef Sian. Rob’s experienced weather-eye meant he paced our journey to St Kilda so that we made the best of the beautiful weather so that we had the full day ashore on the sunniest day, even better than the previous trip in 2019. As before, Craig attended to our every needs and sumptuous meals were served up by Sian, maintaining the high standard of cuisine we have come to expect on the Elizabeth G. As an experienced whale-watcher Zoe was indefatigable in keeping a lookout for whales and dolphins and her enthusiasm was very infectious. She was also careful to make sure everyone was alerted when any were sighted. All in all it was a fantastic trip and I can’t wait till the next one.

Fabulous !I will be honest and admit that I hadn’t even heard of the Flannan Isles until I booked this cruise, so some speedy reading was called for!  I’m please I did, for that little knowledge created an aura about the place, and when we were lucky enough (thanks to James !) to actually step ashore, then the highlight of my cruise was instantly created. Then, cruising across to visit the plethora of gannet further added to the Flannan experience, a fabulous place !  That is not to say it was the only highlight – the standing stones at Callanish were another highlight, and being able to anchor within sight of the stones just added to the experience.  Those were my own personal highlights, but Eigg and The Shiants were also amazing places.  St Kilda was always my dream island to visit, and I managed that on a previous cruise with you, but I must say, I think this cruise actually surpassed that one – what more can I say !  The crew were simply fabulous.  Helen kept the accommodation spotless throughout, catered for our every need, Emma provided wonderful meals, Will was a true action man, pointing out wildlife, lifting anchors, fastening ropes precariously on Flannan, and of course, James was ever the perfect skipper.  Each and every one of the crew were brilliant to share the cruise with, so friendly, so keen to provide absolutely anything that anyone wanted.

This was our fifth trip on Elizabeth G and once again Rob and his superb team (including shore based Emma) delivered another fabulous holiday. Last years didn’t happen due to circumstances beyond everyone’s control. It was great to be back at the sharp end wildlife watching in the dramatic sea and landscapes. Lynsey, the wildlife guide, shared her encyclopaedic knowledge of all things animal and mineral making the holiday even more enjoyable. Sian produced the most delicious menus in quantities way above our capacity although we did our best, especially Jeff. This was our third trip with Craig and it’s just like holidaying with a family friend nothing is too much trouble, superb service. Although sea conditions didn’t allow us to keep to the original itinerary Rob ensured the alternatives were just as rewarding and his choice of overnight anchorages were idyllic and of course there was the mandatory hand dived scallops for dinner on the last night. The wildlife didn’t fail to deliver, breading birds by the tens of thousands on the towering sea cliffs, rafting on the sea and soaring overhead. Plus enough eagles whales and dolphins to keep everyone happy. St Kilda next year. Jill and Dave Jones

When out of sight of land, we were all more intent on spotting birds & cetaceans & Rob was always keen to slow down & manoeuvre to give us the best possible view Some of the landings were a little tricky but all well worth it & we all eventually mastered the art of donning life jackets & boarding the tender. Rob always managed to find us sheltered anchorages, often with views of white-tailed eagles & seals. His local knowledge meant that he could amend the itinerary to suit weather conditions. Although we were unable to land on the Flannan Isles as planned, Rob added in a visit to the Shiants, which more than made up for it. Lynsey has a huge knowledge of wildlife & geology & an amazing ability for spotting cetaceans at a distance. Craig always got us ashore safely & used his experience of the area so suggest suitable walks.  For anyone who loves Scotland, has an interest in wildlife, enjoys good food & has even an average amount of fitness & mobility, I’d say “Go for it but make sure you pack clothing for all weathers!"

If I had to pick one it would be Emma, as she is quite an amazingly talented chef, but really all were fantastic in their different roles.  It was truly amazing & we were so lucky to see St Kilda in such brilliant sunshine.  James put together a lovely video and I would love to have a copy of it if possible?  Our very best wishes to you and your family,

Everything went to plan from the bag drop off to arriving on board and departure equally easy with crew being extremely helpful with baggage transfer. Emma, Cat & Lynsey were superb, James was a wonderful Captain and ran an excellent ship with Ritchie being a great number two to James. Knowing the West Coast of Scotland quite well having cruised on my own yacht there for number of years, I thought James worked out an ideal cruise with the right amount of sea and shore time and included interesting places to go to. Don't hesitate it is worth every penny!

Thank you very much for another lovely holiday on the Elizabeth G. This was a short cruise but we packed in some good walking in some beautiful locations. We still saw a lot of wildlife including two sea eagles sat on a beach! Chris, our skipper, was brilliant getting the ship in relatively close to shore so that we could see them through our binoculars and take some photos without disturbing the birds. We also saw otters, deer and loads of birds. The crew were as fantastic as ever, the new ensuite cabins are luxury with comfy beds and thoughtful touches with lights just in the right place when in bed reading, lots of storage and the vegetarian food was perfect! Great crew, nice fellow guests, wonderful food and a lot of laughs with wildlife sightings mixed in! Perfect and yes I have booked again!

This was a superb holiday, travelling solo with strangers on board the Emma Jane. Some were experienced cruisers; others, like me, new to the experience. The group was friendly and I think everyone managed to do as much or as little as they chose to – joining Will on his fascinating wildlife walks, ambling along the tow path or just watching the view change from an easy chair as we moved along the canal and lochs. The crew made a great team - from James' handling of the boat through flights of locks, Helen's watchful care of us and our cabins, Ruth's amazing cooking (for me, the best vegan food I've ever been served.) The weather was lovely, I saw almost everything I hoped to see and lot more I didn't know was there, I enjoyed the informality and peace of it all. I wouldn't have been able to do this without the waiver a single supplement, so thanks to Hebrides Cruises for that.

Everything was perfect - especially our crew who seemed to become part of the family and made every day a different experience. This morning we received a card (of leaping dolphins) written on by all the family. Perhaps Poppy's words to Grandma and Grandpa say it all "I loved this trip so much! I hope you had as much fun as I did". The cry goes out "Where next?" but at our age this is probably an impossible dream. However , you never know and it would be lovely to think that the Barlow family had something else it might offer us. The rest of the trip followed on with a variety of peaceful anchorages and well led shore visits. The wildlife didn't let us down with sightings of eagles, dolphins, the St Kilda wren, a whale and too many seabirds to list. We couldn't have been better looked after better by skipper Chris, guide Nigel, bosun Amy and chef Iain who made a lovely team. St Kilda and the isles of the Outer Hebrides

We’re just back from a superb 10-night cruise aboard Elizabeth G. It’s our latest trip with Rob and his crew. With en-suite cabins now it’s even more of a luxury trip. Not that we spent much time in the cabin - instead we were generally found on the top observation deck, watching shearwaters dance across the waves, fulmars shoot past effortlessly, gannets flying in squadron-formation and panicky puffins duck beneath our wake. We’re enticed down for two reasons: bow-riding dolphins, when we hang over the bow sharing the excitement and energy of this spectacle with our fellow guests, and food: Mags was our cook preparing fabulous meals with local ingredients, including scallops hand-dived by our skipper, Rob. It was at dinner each evening that Rob would discuss the next day’s itinerary, balancing our wishes with the weather and his incredible knowledge of the most picturesque anchorages. Each day saw us exploring a new island with the help of Nigel our wildlife guide, taken ashore by Rob and Bosun Craig in the tender. And we even got to St Kilda. St Kilda is a unique place with a magical atmosphere; an atmosphere that lingers in part because of its remoteness. Rob found the weather window to allow a 2-night stay and it was here, on our trip round the stacs, that guests and crew came together on the front deck to gaze in awe at the thousands of seabirds around us. As we disembarked, a little sadly, in Oban on our last day I couldn’t help wonder how soon we’ll get the urge to return...

Any information required was always quickly dealt with by Emma. There was plenty of room inside for both dining and seating for discussing our days and planning ahead .The outside space for wildlife viewing was wonderful, the high viewing area above the bridge was perfect for whales and birds, the bow area for dolphins who enjoyed our company on several occasions. Even the Hot Tub was enjoyed by eight of the nine cruisers. Three perfect and varied meals per day produced by our culinary expert chef were an important part of the whole experience. The boat was always spotless thanks to our bosun. We saw Whales , Dolphins. Seals. Eagles and sea birds by the thousand. Our trip to the Outer Hebrides was exceptional in every way; the talented staff; the comfortable accommodations; the little details (a refreshing glass of Prosecco on the return of each day's trip); the always-full cookie jar; the welcoming and beautifully decorated table spread with good food; the post-dinner discussions and chart-reading with Captain James and our naturalist, Will; the frolicking Bottlenose dolphins "bow riding" upside down next to the "Emma Jane"; the seals lazily lounging on the rocky ledges; the Minke whales; the diving gannets, nesting puffins, and Great Skua (nicknamed "Bonzies" by the Scots.....Will photographed one Bonxie trying to grab a mackerel away from a shearwater); the while fulmars flitting in and out the rocky crevices; and our wonderful trip companions. It was a trip to treasure and relive many times in future years! Every new adventure offered the chance to read and to learn about the many marine birds, the "beasties" (ocean mammals), and the fascinating stories and history of the Outer Hebrides. All experiences were unique; hiking in the Isle of Eigg to the "Massacre Cave"; viewing habitats of nesting puffins, guillemots, shags, fulmars on the cliffs of the "Shiants" and St. Kilda's; seeing the aquaculture salmon rafts stretched in a row off the coast of Skye; steaming across the water to the archipelago of St. Kilda's and experiencing the view of Hirta, St. Kilda's main island, mysteriously rising out of the fog as we approached the island All were memorable experiences. And we were lucky! The weather was perfect for our trip....some light drizzle off and on, some wind but no strong "houlies" (very strong winds)! This is a trip of a lifetime. We were so pleased with the charter booking from the initial emails inquiring about dates available to the last minute questions and timely responses as we prepared to head to Scotland. Emma is professional, kind, and prompt in responding by email. We appreciate good customer service and yours is excellent. Since this was our second cruise with Skipper James and the Emma Jane, we knew what to expect about anchorages and visiting the islands. However, this cruise exceeded any expectations we had. We enjoyed returning to some islands we had previously visited and seeing new places. We continue to be overwhelmed by our visit to St. Kilda (thank you, Skipper James!) and seeing the many, many species and numbers of birds throughout the cruise that were not around in these numbers in September 2017. James knows much about all aspects of the Hebrides; if he doesn’t know an answer, he says that he doesn’t know. I like that. Will was knowledgeable about cetaceans, birds, plants, and extremely helpful to those of us who decided to take some of the walks that included narrow and muddy trails with steep inclines. He was available to offer a hand or arm to steady us as we hiked up and down the hills. Anchoring in protected areas overnight is an extraordinary experience—the quiet, the skies, the gentle rocking of the vessel. All ten of us on this charter live on bodies of water—bays, lakes, ocean. Anchoring in coves next to small villages or near an unpopulated island is special. The cruise was extra special. We were made to feel welcomed back and our friends from New Hampshire were thrilled with their experiences seeing the Hebrides and the wildlife, scenery, remoteness, and the comfort of the Emma Jane.

It had been an amazing week with not a drop of rain. Getting to the special places that we visited is what makes a holiday with Hebrides Cruises unique. My thanks to my sailing companions and fellow adventurers, to skipper Rob, mate Craig and cook Mags who were all magnificent, and Emma on shore.

Idyllic Islands: Mull, Iona, Staffa & the Treshnish Isles

This memorable cruise in these beautiful islands exceeded all expectations. We were well looked after by the crew: the food was delicious and great care was taken to cater for individual needs. Friendly and knowledgeable guidance, and the planning of routes to make the most of conditions gave us confidence that we were in safe hands. Our favourite experiences were watching the dolphins playing alongside the boat, the magnificent sight of Fingal's Cave and the tranquility of a walk on Ulva. The abbey at Iona and the remains of the chapel at Inch Kenneth were also of great interest to us. Thank you for making this holiday so special. Peter and Stephanie

We had never been on a holiday like this before but we had an amazing time We were blessed with the weather and calm seas ! The crew were very professional and great fun to be with Chris the captain was obviously very knowledgable and instilled a deal of confidence . Craig the bosun was very attentive and very professional ,quietly going about his duties and had a lovely sense of humour Alexa was our guide and her knowledge of the wild life was amazing .she was attentive and caring always making sure everyone was ok . Finally Maggs the chef was amazing .what she was able to cook up in that small compact galley was wonderful Every meal was beautifully prepared and presented So much so my wife and I have had 3 meals from her website since we have returned home! I would definitely recommend Hedrides Cruises It is such a wonderful way to see the islands and if your lucky like we were you might just be entertained for 2 hours of dolphin dancing around the boat ! That was a memory that will be with me for ever .

This is my third trip with Hebrides cruises and it's like meeting up with old friends every time. The crew may change, but the warmth, care and incredible service remains the same with nothing being too much trouble and the effort made to give everyone a good experience is a hallmark of the company. The onshore trips allow for individual choices in how one wants to spend the time ashore while always having the option of a guide who is familiar with the area and advice on things worth seeing . The welcome back with a glass of fizz and home( or should it be boat?)baked cakes is lovely. And talking about food, I have rarely eaten so well on holiday, with Peter in the kitchen producing continually exciting and varied but always delicious meals. Pauline kept everything in sparkling order and James and Lynsey ensured we didn't miss a thing whether it be a sighting of eagles, seals or porpoises - a particular highlight was Lunga and time spent with the puffins! As a single traveller, I always feel so at home and comfortable with my fellow travellers that I find it hard to imagine my year without a trip around the Isles - roll on No. 4!

What a wonderful experience we had on this most enjoyable cruise. Everything was so well organised from the initial contact and information give by Emma, the greeting by the crew, and throughout the six night cruise, we could not have been better looked after. Every aspect of the week was meticulously organised and we could not have asked for more. Although on some days the light wasn't perfect for photography - my main interest - the skipper, Chris, anticipated the best day to visit what was perhaps the highlight of the week, an afternoon on Lunga, where we saw sea birds by the thousands and especially puffins. This and all the other visits ashore, were greatly enhanced by Alexa, our wildlife guide who made the week so much more enjoyable and a great learning experience. Having a slight walking disability, I was particularly grateful for the additional attention and assistance I had, . On board, we were looked after exceptionally well by Mags, our wonderful chef who made certain we were well fed - the food was perfect every day - and by Craig, the bosun who kept everything running smoothly from the catering aspect to the everyday day tasks around the vessel. There were eight guests on board and we all had the same complaint, 6 nights went by far too quickly.

We know nothing of Scotland. It’s time for us to see why people like this area of the world so much. We book a tour found on the internet. The dates are right. We travel to Oban and find the pre-trip information sent to us invaluable. We wait at the dock for the crew to meet us and take our soft-sided luggage to our cabin. The other guests are prompt and the crew is timely too. We marvel at the amazing cameras and the experiences of other passengers. Two have traveled with the ship multiple times. We are focused on where we are and the journey ahead of us. Our luggage is delivered to our ensuite cabin. There is plenty of space to store our gear and thoughtfully placed shelves for items, such as cameras and binoculars we might need without digging through our bags. The double bed has a portal window and well placed reading lamps. Our cabin and the public areas were impeccably cleaned each morning while we are off to shore with naturalist, Alexa. There is a library selection of literature and guide books to help identify what we saw on walks. I noticed a scrabble game, which we never found time to play. The chef, Mags, works in a tiny galley and turns out the most amazing meals. Giving people a choice between vegetarian and non vegetarian entrees, wine is included with the dinners. A breakfast buffet is laid out and there is always a hot breakfast available. There are 8 of us on this voyage. We all eat together and take excursions in the morning and afternoon. Craig is calm and also assists the chef and helps Chris, the Captain, anchor the boat when we stop for the night. Weather and sea conditions are the great unknown in the Hebrides. The deciding factor to where we will go. Chris lets us know the itinerary will be flexible. He picks amazing calm spots to anchor each night. He is very good at communicating why we are going or not going to an island and invites us up to see the bridge. For so many years it has been my aspiration to cruise the length of the Caledonian canal. The cruise on board 'Emma Jane' fulfilled my ambition and was a truly magical experience that exceeded all expectations. It was one I shall never forget. The scenery was stunning, and to see it from the water offered a unique view, which added so much to its aura. The 'Emma Jane' crew - Skipper James, Bosun Maddie, Chef Kevin and wildlife expert Susie - were very welcoming and always on hand to attend to every need. Their knowledge, attention to detail, and engagement with the guests was much appreciated by all those on board. The varied menus were exceptional and all were five-star meals, with every taste catered for. Nothing was too much trouble. The walks (even cycle rides) and visits ashore offered a real insight into the 'ports of call', and the transfers from ship to shore via the tender added much to the experience. Thank you and well done everyone at Hebrides Cruises. We hope to return soon for another memorable cruise aboard the 'Emma Jane'.

Please convey our thanks to Rob, Stevie, Phil and Alex for their efforts to provide a fantastic week afloat. The crew’s efforts made our week on board a time to remember and look back on with complete satisfaction. Despite the weather doing it’s best to disrupt our trip, the crew confirmed their absolute ability to put us amongst the wildlife of the area. Rob’s command of the vessel and knowledge of the area ensured that we were at all times safe and comfortable. As a retired chef, I did my utmost to test Stevies ability in his galley, to his credit, the food produced was excellent, his attention to our dietary requests exceeded our expectations. With visibility offen quite poor, Alex our guide did a steadfast job, remaining outside in all weathers whilst spotting the wildlife we had come to view.

Dear Emma - I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our holiday. Our hope was that we would visit some of the more remote and inaccessible islands of the Outer Hebrides, and you certainly achieved that. We visited 11 islands in our 10 day trip and of the 2 where we had been before we saw parts not previously explored so were delighted. The crew were professional and attentive. Chris, Craig and Nigel have lots of trips under their belts. Our chef Lulu was a superb cook and a delight. Her enthusiasm was magnetic. Nigel was very happy to share some helpful photography tips and lessons for those of us who wanted to use the opportunity to expand our photography skills. Composition and use of the camera functions were explained and were eagerly applied and the resultant photos perhaps a little better than might otherwise have been achieved by the keen pupils, but still a long way short of Nigel's inspiring images. We came to see more islands, we achieved that in spades. We also had great fun, walked and hiked miles, saw some amazing sights and landscapes. Watched wildlife in action, learned to recognise the wildlife we saw, developed a healthy respect for the sea, had a sense of awe at the remoteness and resourcefulness of the far flung communities. Altogether we came away with a refreshing outlook on life and warm memories shared with 12 fellow shipmates that is hard to believe 10 days previously had never met each other. Wishing you every success for what is left of this season and next and the forthcoming awards on 22nd November.

Hi It has taken some time to get around to writing this review - partly because I moved house 10 days after returning from my adventure! I thought long and hard about 'to go or not to go' and eventually took the plunge finally having chance to set foot on Hirta - the island I had first heard about some 30 years before - it was amazing to be there - and on Canna and Sanday, Harris, Vatersay, Rhum and the rest. The food was incredible and the fact that so much care and attention was taken of individual difficulties and allergies was such a relief as I was never worrying if something I abhorred or could eat would turn up on the table! Our skipper (Chris) and Bosun (Craig) were a wealth of knowledge and information which they shared freely and being allowed into the wheelhouse to see Hirta on the horizon and to be able to find out about lighthouse flashes, shipping lanes, navigation and weather reports was fascinating. I have never seen people work so hard and yet maintain such a pleasant, courteous and helpful manner. I had a wonderful time - basking sharks, Minke whales, dolphin bow racing, sea eagles, puffins and wild otter as well as the wild deer on Rhum - magical! I have come back with a diary and head full of memories and an i pad full of photos as well as the deep desire to save my pennies and adventure off again at some future date. Thank you, thank you for making my dreams come true

The nightly briefings showed how much thought went into planning where we were to be the next day. Lindsay was great, there was not a minute of the day when she didn't have her eye out for whales, dolphins and birds. We were richly rewarded by having two minky whales swim under our boat. What a sight. We were all a little emotional. Emma our bosun. She was an absolute delight. Hard working and lots of fun. Nothing was too much trouble for her. What a treasure. Lastly but certainly not least. Yvonne, our chef. My husband is still talking about your salmon pie! The food that was produced in your small, rocking kitchen was stunning. FAN-TAST-IC. EXCELLENT 10 days, really lucky with the weather on Kilda and Shiants and even luckier with the crew - James Skipper, Yvonne Chef, Emma Bosun and last but not least Linsey as guide. The operation of the Emma G was excellent, food yummy, enthusiastic guide and very hard working bosun. The guests were all quite different but the environment and sheer fun of certain members of crew, no names, but in particular Emma and Yvonne, created a relaxing atmosphere that led to everybody getting on very well. We covered a large distance but visited some wonderful places, the only downside was that long distances had to be covered which meant lesser time ashore. However it was very worthwhile and the communication and daily briefings kept all of us fully informed Can’t wait for next years brochure!

Dear Emma, How could I not love your wonderful cruise with such perfect weather and such an attentive crew and lovely other guests. I loved the “Small Isles” and the wildlife was terrific and plentiful. Hospitality on board was typically Scottish --we ate very well thanks to Steve who was a bit of a miracle working as he did in such a small space. Craig was solicitous for our well being and was generous with his time in spite of all his “housekeeping“ and crewing. The Skipper was so patient and alert and often saw creatures before the rest of us and guided Elizabeth G accordingly. His knowledge of the best anchorages was excellent obviously born of long experience. Chris G’s knowledge of birds and other wildlife really made the trip worthwhile as his expertise alerted us quickly to what was out there. The walks ashore were just the right length for me personally as I am a senior citizen (but used to walking). Sincere good wishes, Jill Reilly

Private Charter 10 Nights

28 June 2018

We set off on 28 June from Oban for our ten days exploration of the Hebrides with the hope that we’d visit St Kilda. We did, and so much more. The crew (Chris (skipper), Alexa (wildlife guide), Pete (cook), Emma (bosun), were fantastic from the off. They effortlessly transported our mountain of luggage to our comfortable cabins which Emma kept spotless through the cruise, as well as looking after us on the rough crossing to St Kilda through to Caribbean strength G&Ts. Chris was a really good skipper. He sailed the boat well and did his best to find a route that best managed his passengers’ seafaring abilities, and he also had a ceremony to give homage to the Blue Men of the Minch! Pete’s amazing menus incorporated our requests – I’ll always remember his mussels on the first night, his haggis Scotch eggs, my mother’s clootie dumpling and much more – and we appreciated how he involved the kids (9 to 11) in the kitchen. Alexa (with Chris) magic’d up an amazing array of wildlife with huge enthusiasm and great knowledge. We became blasé about the number of dolphins we saw – I can best quote Chris “the weather and the wildlife sightings are some of the best I’ve known in almost 20 years”. The weather was fantastic which enabled us to land and explore Tobermory, Canna, Sanday, Taransay, Hirta (St. Kilda), Mingulay, Vatersay, Rum, Lunga (Treshnish Isles) and Loch Buie, as well as sailing past Neist Point (Skye), Boreray (St. Kilda), Monachs, Hellisay in the Sound of Barra, Eigg, Staffa, Ulva and Iona. The weather was so good we were able to swim off Sanday, Taransay, Mingulay and Vatersay, as well as enjoy the hot tub. This was a trip of a lifetime for us all. We were able to see so many places which have been specks on the horizon for so long. The cruise was magical and extra special. It’s given us memories to last a lifetime!

What a fabulous holiday ! My second cruise with Hebrides Cruises, and they just get better and better … Rob, Emma, Lynsey and Ian were an amazing crew, each and every one of them couldn’t do enough for us it seemed, we were thoroughly spoilt ! The Emma Jane is a lovely vessel, so comfortable, plenty of room, though can’t comment on the Hot Tub as the gents didn’t manage to sample it’s delights (the Ladies rather enjoyed themselves though !). The standard of food was really exceptional, and plenty of it - I defy anyone not to be impressed ! Chris, our skipper, was very focused on our wish to see the Monachs, St Kilda and the Shiants, along with our focus on watching wildlife. Sam, (our wildlife guide) was fantastic at spotting cetaceans and Chris was happy to divert and wait so we could see them. We had outstanding luck and were privileged to see dolphins repeatedly making fish bait balls, which attracted gannets, gulls, skuas and petrels. This went on for about 2 hours. I have to further congratulate Chris for his sensitivity in never approaching wild animals too closely; he always kept a distance which allowed us to see their natural behaviour. We ended the cruise with a day hopping from one eagle’s nest to the next, again we had great views but respect was given to the animals. Craig (Bosun) gives superb customer service. Always there to help, always with an eye on safety and our comfort. He was unflappable! Stevy (Cook) consistently produced really nice meals. If I have dairy products I feel ill, Stevy did not put a foot wrong, he always had an alternative I could eat, I was never ill, this is above and beyond the service I have received in expensive hotels! What a friendly company! We were made very welcome from the moment we left the bus. Our luggage was dealt with very efficiently and put on board. The same thing happened on our departure when our bags were delivered to the bus and we were given a warm send off by the wonderful crew. The scenery was stunning and the overnight anchorages were always well-positioned in sheltered bays so that we could have undisturbed nights. It was a well thought-out itinerary, adapting to weather conditions and suggestions from our leaders. The onshore trips were well-organized and help was always offered when using the zodiacs. The crew were a wonderful source of local knowledge and always happy to answer questions. The crew were absolutely wonderful, always cheerful and friendly and so obliging. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The meals were always delicious and varied - how Stevie managed to provide such a variety of piping hot dishes in such a small space is a complete mystery! I can't think of any way the cruise could have been more special for me. Mooring so close to the Cuillins was perhaps my most special moment, although the time spent on St Kilda was quite magical. Seeing such a variety and quantity of birds and sea creatures throughout the trip has inspired me to buy a really good pair of binoculars! Go for it and hope to get good weather and calm seas. It will be an exciting trip and a real adventure. The scenery is spectacular, and such a variety of islands to visit, each with their own special charm.

You have the most amazing company. James was fantastic - so strong and dependable and knowlegable but a nice sense of humour- and of course despite our best efforts managed to spot sea critters before us all the time. I meant to tell him how much we enjoyed meeting his parents- we really connected with them and had a great time. Caroline is a great find- so tall and beautiful and the most amazing cook - and never phased by working in a galley on a boat - always so happy and friendly - and Emma looked as if she was born at sea- so at ease on a boat and seemed to be everywhere helping everyone- and such a lovely smile and so friendly. Those two seemed to get along so well together. And Chris always up on the top deck scanning for birds and sea critters with his binoculars and a wealth of information.

What is it about the Hebrides? The islands have been pulling me back every year since my first visit in the early 90’s. It may be my Scottish ancestry, but I think it’s the unique combination of landscape, wildlife and community that proves irresistible to the traveller in search of wilderness and solitude. For years, I have stood on the edge of islands like Skye, the Uists and Harris looking out at all those other islands, the unpopulated, inaccessible ones, wondering what they must be like.

Wow...did we hit the jackpot with this cruise! A truly wonderful experience from start to finish. From the minute we first contacted the attentive and friendly office staff (thank you Emma), to the luxury, spotlessly clean cabins, delicious fresh 5* food and the fabulous crew on board who continuously went 'above and beyond' to ensure our continuous comfort. It all contributed to making our experience the 'cruise of a lifetime' that it was. Being huge Scottish wildlife fenatics, we were over the moon with the various wildlife sightings we were lucky enough to see and what an absolute treat having a skipper with such exceptional local wildlife knowledge. We simply couldn't fault our experience. Thank you Hebrides Cruises!

The cruise met all our expectations and the Skipper gave us a comprehensive tour around Mull and the adjacent islands. It was a pleasure to cruise on “ Emma Jane” which we found to be an excellent vessel , well founded with spacious accommodation in the cabin and saloon areas. Facilities for viewing whilst on passages was excellent with plenty of space for all passengers. Perhaps the most important aspect are the crew whose contribution to the cruise was excellent’. Hurry up and book a cruise for a fantastic holiday aboard a superb vessel!

What can I say! Fabulous trip. Initial welcome from the crew was warm and welcoming which continued throughout the trip. The food and service was of an excellent standard and served in a warm intimate and informal setting. Each night Ross the chef cooked up a culinary delight and delicious cakes and cookies through out the day with a lovely light lunch in between. The beautiful Seahorse and cabins were spotlessly clean. What a great way to travel seeing stunning scenery and exploring ancient woodland (walks and bike rides are optional) or just relaxing watching the world go by, curled up with a book, cup of coffee (or glass of wine!) on one of their many comfy sofas. The hot tub at the back of the boat was a huge bonus when it came to the end of a long walk. I would thoroughly recommend this cruise to anyone wishing to relax whilst taking in some of Scotlands finest scenery. 10 out of 10. Well done Emma,Rob and Crew

24 September 2017

What a truly memorable week even though the weather was a little wet at times! The Elizabeth G is just perfect for cruising around the islands. Rob, our skipper, took us to the most magical places to drop anchor for lunch and at night. Some of my best memories are, the ship going quite close inshore as we watched a sea eagle flying through a rainbow back to its nest, hearing red deer calling and then fighting as it was the rutting season on the hills surrounding us when we were overnighting in a sea loch, watching wild otters swimming in the kelp with some inquisitive seals when we stopped for lunch and seeing the night sky with no light pollution or planes flying over. Mealtimes are also very special on board with everyone eating together and sharing their stories of the day and listening to the plans for the next day. The cruise on the Elizabeth G was my first holiday travelling solo so I was little nervous about it but I really didn't need to worry at all. The crew were very welcoming and the group of fellow guests were very friendly. There was always a lot of laughter at mealtimes and out on our walks. We were lucky to have Nigel on board who is a fantastic photographer so he was giving us tips on how to take photos of both the scenery and wildlife. If you are thinking of going, just book it, you won't regret it so long as you like good company, wonderful food and fantastic scenery! I am now booked on the St Kilda trip next year and am looking forward to it already...

There is not a way to say enough about our enjoyment of the cruise. Emma was very good about responding quickly to our inquiries and providing all the details that we needed for booking. The crew was professional, knowledgeable, interesting and fun. We have never done a boat cruise and didn’t know what to expect but the expectations bar has been set high after our experience over these 10 days.Response is not what would have made cruise extra special – but what did make cruise extra special. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary with this cruise. Chef Ross made a cake and decorated it with “50” made of candies and presented it to us at tea time one afternoon! Another special experience was the opportunity to meet Skipper James’ parents; I read his mother’s book while on the vessel and asked James many questions about his family. When we were in Tobermory, James’ mother and father visited us. This was a lovely “extra” that we will remember throughout our lives.  We have recommended the trip to several friends already.

The food was plentiful and absolutely delicious, prepared by Tony, the chef - it was just as well we went walking every day! The crew were wonderful, their enthusiasm made the trip a great experience. Our meals were excellent adding greatly to the joy of the cruise. Everything was clean and tidy and kept that way by the diligence of the crew.

A great combination of places with such an enthusiastic wildlife guide in Vivi. Highlights for me were Canna, Rob’s hand-‐dived scallops, and the walk at Inverie. It was good that we got a sense of the communities as well, rather than it just being about wildlife.

We have truly had the most amazing experience with you on the beautiful Elizabeth G. I cant think of a more memorable place to spend our anniversary. Thank you for all the attention to detail you put into the trip.

Eating Scallops within an hour of leaving the water and within 200m of where they were landed will stay with us for a long time. Emma was very helpful throughout the process. She also answered our enquiries promptly and made sure our requests were available on board.

Scenery fantastic, anchorages great given the constraints of some adverse weather conditions on a couple of occasions. Onshore trips and crews local knowledge excellent. Jane Hogg: Private Charter
