A Second Splash of Magic: Zoë and Lynsey Return withThe Seal Who Loved to Sing
The creative partnership that is Zoë Stevenson and Lynsey Bland has once again brought something special to young readers, and adult alike. Following the success of their first collaboration, and with a huge thank you to many of our guests and crew who supported What Colour Are Your Wellies?- the duo returns with their second children’s book, The Seal Who Loved to Sing. A heartfelt story that celebrates individuality, courage, and the joy of finding your own voice.
Zoë, a former wildlife guide, draws on her deep connection with nature following a two week stay on the beautiful Mingulay- a popular cruising destination and haven for the grey seal- to craft a story that feels both authentic and imaginative. Her understanding of animal behaviour adds a layer of realism that grounds the narrative, even as it explores themes that resonate far beyond the shore. Paired with Lynsey’s charming illustrations, the book creates a vivid world that young readers can dive into.
Lynsey, who works as an assistant shore manager and head guide, brings the story to life visually with warmth and personality. Each page reflects not only her skill but also a genuine affection for the natural world the pair know so well. Together, their combined experience shines through, making the book feel both educational and emotionally engaging.
At its heart, The Seal Who Loved to Sing tells the story of Rona, a young seal, who dares to be different, uses her voice and eventually finds her community. It’s a simple yet powerful message, encouraging children to embrace what makes them unique, speak out and find your crowd in a busy world.
Zoë and Lynsey wish to thank again those who have continued to support their journey. Without your love of Usha in What Colour Are Your Wellies? Rona the wee seal would never have found her voice.
